Fun in and around Dundee

Frank says: Dundee is a small yet modern Scottish city and it’s my family home. My mom Dorothy lives here along with her brother (Doug) and his wife (Pat). Having our wedding here will allow them and my UK cousins to share in our special day. We also want to warmly thank our U.S. and non-UK family for their excitement and willingness to travel to not only attend our wedding but also to explore one of Europe’s most iconic cities (and meet our Scottish family).

Glasgow and Edinburgh (Scotland’s capital city) are just 1.5 hours away from Dundee by train, and about 1 hour away by train from each other. It’s easy to plan a 1-2 day trip to either or both cities by hopping on board the ScotRail trains. It’s a great way to see the Scottish countryside. If we had to choose, we’d visit Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle, The Scotch Whisky Experience, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and walking the Royal Mile are must-do’s while in this ancient and iconic city.

Pete says: Frank and I spent Christmas 2017 in Dundee and we had the best time. There are pubs, nightlife, and great places to eat. Getting around is easy by walking, taxi, or bus. Everything is close together in the City Square and is within walking distance of the hotel we recommend – The Malmaison Dundee. We wanted a small metropolitan setting for our wedding and also wanted to allow Frank’s mom to share in our special day, which otherwise would’ve been impossible due to her age and inability to safely travel to the U.S – she’s a sprite 86!

Things to do for a 1-3 day stay in Dundee

  • Visit St. Andrews, the home of golf: 1 hour bus trip from Dundee. This is a must do while visiting Dundee.
  • Visit the Dundee V & A Museum: Showcases the history of design in Scotland through the present day.
  • Explore the Dundee Waterfront
  • Visit Broughty Ferry: explore the shops, and be sure to have Fish and Chips at The Anchor Bar, seriously. Take the 10 Bus from the Dundee City Square.
  • Eat lunch at Fisher and Donaldson. Have tea, a Scotch pie, and don’t miss indulging in a fudge donut (Frank’s personal fave) fisheranddonaldson.com
  • Dine at Castlehill Restaurant. “Thought by many to be worthy of earning Dundee’s first Michelin star, the Castlehill is passionate about Scottish produce (the chef is a keen forager for wild herbs and fungi) and invests a lot of imagination into turning out beautifully presented dishes made with Angus lamb, Perthshire pork and Shetland scallops – art on a plate. Five-course tasting menu is £55 ($72).” – Lonely Planet
  • Pub crawl around the City Square. Dundee is a raving college town (the University of Dundee has been here since 1881). Just stroll around the streets of the square to discover the city’s best pubs, meeting places, and night spots. To find out where Frank and Pete are, contact us or message us on our Facebook page.
